For many landowners and conservationists, rhododendrons are a massive challenge that are difficult to contend with. Although they are aesthetically pleasing and beautiful to look at, they are well-known for wreaking havoc on our ecosystems. Once they grow unmanaged, they have the capability to have an adverse impact on local wildlife, native flora, and spread disease.
Here at TreeClear UK, we provide dedicated rhododendron clearance and removal using effective methods to completely eliminate rhododendrons and prevent regrowth.
As rhododendrons grow rapidly, it’s simply not enough to remove them using traditional means such as hand cutting, especially in larger forest or woodland areas where native habitats can be disrupted.
However here at Treeclear we have devised a more efficient method that is extremely effective at eradicating rhododendrons and greatly reducing the amount of regeneration compared to traditional methods.

Understanding the Rhododendron Problem
Invasive rhododendrons, especially Rhododendron ponticum, are extremely difficult to control and manage. Rhododendron is extremely fast-growing and once established, native plants and trees struggle to battle this menace and cannot grow due to the lack of light through its thick canopy.
When native plants and grasses disappear, animals, insects and butterflies cannot survive, and our important biodiversity is lost. Lack of management and control has allowed Rhododendron to invade large areas of woodland, wetland, heathland and countryside across the UK. Not only that, Rhododendron ponticum can also harbour disease, causing the spread of Phytophthora ramorum which in turn can be transmitted to other species.
Eradicate rhododendron from your site, woodland, nature reserve, or shooting estate for good with the Treeclear system!
Treeclear has developed a mulching system that enables us to flail the rhododendron down into the ground that rips and smashes the main stump and root system that reduces the amount of regeneration in subsequent seasons.
Not only that, our system smashes and mulches the woody vegetation into small pieces leaving the site, clean and tidy with the residue remaining on site to act as a mulch.
Traditional methods are:
- Not cost effective
- Take too long
- Unrealistic goals
- High chance of regeneration
Traditional methods such as hand cutting and burning are not cost effective as the time required to physically clear areas are not viable.
- Removing the stumps – extremely time consuming and costly
- Stump grinding – not practical with poor results
- Stem injection – Slow and costly
Using the Treeclear system with a follow up programme we can eradicate rhododendron from your land for good. The season after we have flailed your rhododendron we recommend a return visit to site to assess the re-growth (this will be limited) and put forward a management proposal to control this.
Follow-Up Control Methods
After the initial rhododendron clearance, it’s paramount to be proactive and consider follow-up control methods with an accredited contractor like TreeClear UK. Even after a professional clearance, some of the stumps may be regenerated which will require further control by the application of herbicide. We also advise you on future control methods and the ongoing management of your site.
The two main follow-up’s we recommend include:
- Annual Check: For larger sites, a follow-on appraisal is highly recommended the season after the initial clearance. We will provide expert advice to recommend techniques to ensure any regrowth gets treated correctly and the area remains free of invasive rhododendron.
- Spot Treatment: If rhododendron stumps re-sprout, which is minimal using the Treeclear system we recommend treating them by spot spraying with herbicide. This will help to better manage the potential rhododendron growth and is something Treeclear UK can do or assist and advise with.
How to Prevent Rhododendron Regrowth After Clearance
It is extremely important that initial rhododendron clearance is performed in an appropriate and approved method, keeping rhododendrons at bay once clearance has taken place is a secondary follow up. To ensure long-term success, it’s incredibly important to partner with a trusted and accredited contractor that can provide both removal and follow up methods and techniques.
By proceeding with after-care and on-going management, you can achieve optimum land and forest health supporting ecosystem resilience for native vegetation and existing habitats.
