Preserving the Natural Beauty of Cheshire’s Peatlands

Treeclear UK provides peatland restoration in Cheshire and across the UK supporting a range of clients including wildlife trusts, government organisations, and private estates.

Peatlands are crucial for biodiversity, water quality, and carbon sequestration, yet many of Cheshire’s peatlands have been degraded over time due to natural causes, human activity, and poor management.

We can collaborate on a range of peatland restoration techniques including:

  • Habitat creation
  • Re-profiling of ditches

Why Peatland Restoration Matters in Cheshire

Cheshire is known for its amazing green spaces and diverse range of wetlands and peat bogs. These peatlands store carbon, help to regulate local water cycles and are also home to lots of wildlife. We make it our mission to turn this around and bring Cheshire peatlands back to life.

We offer a comprehensive variety of specialist services designed to restore and rejuvenate vast areas of peatland. Years of drainage, peat extraction, and agricultural use have left many peatlands in Cheshire in a degraded state. Restoring these habitats offers numerous environmental and societal benefits including water quality improvement, biodiversity enhancement, and food mitigation.

Our key peatland restoration services include:

Surface Mulching

Surface mulching plays a vital role in restoring Cheshire’s damaged peatlands. By spreading shredded vegetation like heather across the surface that is naturally found in the area, we form a protective layer that locks in moisture, adds organic nutrients to the soil, and restores the return of native plant species crucial for peat formation.

Stump Grinding & Stump Augering

Stump grinding and augering are key steps in converting wooded areas back into thriving peat bogs. In peatland restoration projects where forests were planted or drained, we use advanced machinery like low-pressure excavators equipped with hydraulic grinders to efficiently remove tree stumps down to or beneath the soil surface.

Ditch Blocking and Peat Dams

Blocking ditches and building peat dams are essential methods for restoring Cheshire’s boggy landscapes. Historical drainage for farming has damaged these ecosystems, reducing biodiversity and carbon storage. By sealing old drainage channels and constructing natural peat barriers, we help raise the water table, reviving wetland conditions.

Reprofiling and Bunding

Reprofiling and bunding are important for repairing the structure of peatlands. Reprofiling reshapes the land to better retain water, creating the perfect environment for peat to regenerate. Bunding involves forming raised soil ridges and shallow ditches to direct water flow, keeping the peatland consistently moist and ideal for forming plants that have peat in.

I have used TreeClear UK as contractors for the last nine years and have always been really impressed with their service and approach to each job. Anthony Lambert and his team bring extensive knowledge and experience that is applied with diligence to difficult work sites. The use of their low ground pressure tracked machines on peat mires leave very little impact on sensitive vegetation. Their bespoke mulching equipment has efficiently dealt with really dense stands of rhododendron and regenerated Sitka spruce, reducing material to a manageable chip mat. Our landowners and other clients have been extremely pleased with the end result. I would always recommend TreeClear UK for clearance work on sensitive tree/shrub clearance sites.

Treeclear removed trees, scrub and rhododendron during the winters of 2021/22 and 2022/23 at on of our National Nature Reserves. They delivered an excellent service; competent, practical and efficient on a complex and hazardous site. Their understanding of the difficulties in working on a raised bog and their expert use of specialist equipment was integral to the successful delivery of the project which has allowed us to restore key parts of the habitat to benefit biodiversity and help reduce CO2 emissions.
