Peatland management – Why is it important?

On-going peatland vegetation management is paramount to encourage biodiversity and reduce the possible impacts of climate change through reduced carbon emissions.

Peat bogs act as natural carbon sinks but without proper management, peatlands can dry out and degrade making them ineffective at storing carbon. This can be caused by previous peat workings, overgrown with invasive species such as pine, birch and rhododendron and poor water management.

Peatland management services provided by Treeclear UK include;-

  • Invasive species control
  • Erosion control
  • Low-impact mulching (low ground pressure)
  • Peatland rewetting
  • Long-term peatland management

Invasive Species Control

Treeclear UK provides invasive plant control as part of peatland vegetation management. We are highly-experienced in selectively removing invasive plant species, such as Rhododendron ponticum, that can quickly dominate peatland areas.

Using low-impact and environmentally-friendly mechanical methods, our specialist excavators can eradicate overgrown areas in little time, leaving the site clean and tidy and ready for further restoration works to be completed.

Erosion Control

Erosion control is another integral part of peatland vegetation management for peatlands across the UK. Erosion control serves the purpose of preserving the integrity of the peatland’s soil structure and ensuring the long-term health of the ecosystem.

In order to implement highly-effective erosion control, we use mulching and natural barriers to maintain peatland structure.

Low-Impact Mulching

Treeclear UK utilises low-ground pressure mulching, also referred to as low-impact mulching, to maintain soil health and improve moisture retention. Using purpose-built specialist equipment, the mulch created is recycled back into the bog forming a matrix in which bog plants and sphagnum mosses can grow.

Boasting a 430-horsepower engine, our wide tracked machine operates at a low ground pressure of only 1.0 PSI, making it suitable for work on delicate sites, ensuring that the damage to the surface is kept to a minimum.

Peatland Rewetting

Another key service we provide which is paramount for effective peatland restoration and management is rewetting. This particular service is aimed at restoring the natural hydrology of peatland ecosystems.

There are various methods that are used including blocking drains and ditches using peat plugs and timber dams to stem the flow of water. Perimeter bunding to hold water within the site and cell bunding to allow the water table to be raised over the surface of the peat.

Long-Term Management

To ensure the on-going success of restoration efforts and increase the effectiveness of site, on-going peatland management is paramount. The type of management will depend on the current condition of the site, it may involve ongoing vegetation management, water flow management or further restoration work.

Treeclear UK provides ongoing maintenance inline with your requirements to ensure that your peatland continues to thrive. We are flexible in our approach and can adjust our plans in line with changing conditions and clients long term goals.

Why Is Peatland Vegetation Management Essential?

There are a number of reasons that make peatland vegetation management essential.

Let’s take a look at some of the most prominent reasons that our clients require peatland management from Treeclear UK:

Carbon Sequestration: One of the most prominent benefits of on-going peatland management is the fact that it ensures that peatlands continue to sequester carbon and do not release stored carbon into the atmosphere. This is paramount for mitigating climate changes and preventing carbon emissions. If neglected and not properly looked-after, peatlands can emit large amounts. With the help of our dedicated environmentally-friendly services, management assists in stabilising climate efforts.

  • Biodiversity Preservation: Peatland vegetation management positively contributes towards biodiversity preservation. Peatlands are home to a variety of native plans, insects and animals. Many of those are adapted to wet conditions and therefore management helps to preserve living species so that they continue to thrive in their natural environment. Moreover, the overall health of the ecosystem is boosted.
  • Soil Protection & Erosion Control: Ensuring soil protection and ensuring erosion control is essential for thriving peatlands. Through our dedicated management services, which include controlling invasive species and reintroducing native plants, this helps to positively contribute towards maintaining soil structure. Management helps protect the peat layer, ensuring its long-term health and function.
  • Aesthetic & Land Value: Peatland management also provides the benefits of enhanced aesthetics and land value. Effective management practices contribute to these aspects in various ways such as improving wildlife viewing, restoring natural beauty, and minimising the visual impact of degradation. Management practices offer benefits beyond the realm of ecological health and functionality.

I have used TreeClear UK as contractors for the last nine years and have always been really impressed with their service and approach to each job. Anthony Lambert and his team bring extensive knowledge and experience that is applied with diligence to difficult work sites. The use of their low ground pressure tracked machines on peat mires leave very little impact on sensitive vegetation. Their bespoke mulching equipment has efficiently dealt with really dense stands of rhododendron and regenerated Sitka spruce, reducing material to a manageable chip mat. Our landowners and other clients have been extremely pleased with the end result. I would always recommend TreeClear UK for clearance work on sensitive tree/shrub clearance sites.

Treeclear removed trees, scrub and rhododendron during the winters of 2021/22 and 2022/23 at on of our National Nature Reserves. They delivered an excellent service; competent, practical and efficient on a complex and hazardous site. Their understanding of the difficulties in working on a raised bog and their expert use of specialist equipment was integral to the successful delivery of the project which has allowed us to restore key parts of the habitat to benefit biodiversity and help reduce CO2 emissions.
