Why Peatland Restoration Matters in Yorkshire

Yorkshire boasts some incredible peat landscapes, from vast wetlands to diverse moorlands. These ecosystems are vital for carbon storage, water regulation, and providing habitats for rare wildlife.

Sadly, years of degradation have compromised these peatlands, leading to carbon release and habitat loss. Fortunately, TreeClear UK delivers tailored solutions to restore and sustain these valuable environments.

Healthy peatlands are essential for climate revitalisation, biodiversity conservation, and water management. Our services focus on reviving peatlands and ecosystems so that they can serve us and the surrounding communities for the years to come.

Our key peatland restoration services include:

Surface Mulching

Surface mulching rejuvenates damaged peatlands by spreading chopped native vegetation like heather to form a protective layer. This mulch conserves soil moisture, enriches organic content, and promotes native plant growth crucial for peat development.

Stump Grinding & Stump Augering

To convert what was forested or drained lands back into thriving peat bogs, we employ stump grinding and augering activities. Using specialised low-pressure machinery with hydraulic grinding wheels, we remove tree stumps effectively, preparing the land for natural peat recovery.

Ditch Blocking and Peat Dams

Controlling water flow is vital for peatland health. We block old drainage channels and construct peat bunds to restore the underground boundaries, helping peatlands regain their biodiversity and carbon storage functions.

Reprofiling and Bunding

Land reshaping through reprofiling and bunding improves water retention and supports peat regeneration. Bunds and strategically placed ditches help maintain wet conditions, fostering the growth of peat-forming vegetation.

I have used TreeClear UK as contractors for the last nine years and have always been really impressed with their service and approach to each job. Anthony Lambert and his team bring extensive knowledge and experience that is applied with diligence to difficult work sites. The use of their low ground pressure tracked machines on peat mires leave very little impact on sensitive vegetation. Their bespoke mulching equipment has efficiently dealt with really dense stands of rhododendron and regenerated Sitka spruce, reducing material to a manageable chip mat. Our landowners and other clients have been extremely pleased with the end result. I would always recommend TreeClear UK for clearance work on sensitive tree/shrub clearance sites.

Treeclear removed trees, scrub and rhododendron during the winters of 2021/22 and 2022/23 at on of our National Nature Reserves. They delivered an excellent service; competent, practical and efficient on a complex and hazardous site. Their understanding of the difficulties in working on a raised bog and their expert use of specialist equipment was integral to the successful delivery of the project which has allowed us to restore key parts of the habitat to benefit biodiversity and help reduce CO2 emissions.
